Royal Oak Organics

Royal Oak Organics

Royal Oak, located in Bickerstaff near Ormskirk, Lancashire, is a family-run organic farm deeply committed to sustainability. Managed by Peter Lydiate, his partner Cheryl, and brother Andrew, the farm spans 300 acres, including rented land. Since converting to organic practices in the late 1990s, they’ve grown around 65 different crops, including coloured carrots, beetroots, cauliflower, and sprouts, all on fertile black sand soil. Their focus on flavour and soil health sets them apart, ensuring that each crop meets their high standards of taste.

Sustainability is at the heart of Royal Oak’s operations. They have significantly reduced food waste by selling oversized and undersized vegetables at reduced prices, and any surplus produce is donated to The Big Food Project, a local charity that supports the homeless and vulnerable. Additionally, the farm is involved in the countryside stewardship scheme, with 50 acres dedicated to promoting biodiversity through pollinator support, natural pest control, and birdlife feeding.

By using corn and green manures as break crops, and employing small-scale machinery to prevent soil compaction, Royal Oak continues to prioritize the health of the land. This approach, combined with hand-harvesting methods, ensures their farming techniques have minimal environmental impact. Amidst the growing challenges posed by climate change, the Lydiate family remains steadfast in their mission: producing top-quality organic vegetables while protecting the environment and supporting their community.
