Molyneux Kale Company (MKC) is an innovative farming enterprise based in southwest Lancashire, specialising in various kale varieties. Under the expertise of Chris Molyneux, MKC stands as the only year-round producer of kale in the UK. This achievement is rooted in their extensive knowledge of specific kale varieties, including a uniquely bred proprietary type, advanced sowing and growing techniques and the nutrient-rich soils and maritime climate of southwest Lancashire. Kale typically begins to flower from February onwards and other UK growers import kale from Europe from March to July.
Upon harvesting, kale begins to wilt, dry out, lose colour, and diminish in vitamin content. MKC addresses this by rapidly delivering its kale to customers. They have invested in a dedicated cooler to extract heat from the kale, preserving its moisture, and ensuring it remains fresh, crunchy, and vibrant.
The Molyneux family has farmed in the region for over 150 years. Chris Molyneux, leveraging wisdom passed down through generations, has mastered the art of maximising crop yield from this land. His approach is hands-on, relying on intimate knowledge of the fields and weather patterns rather than modern technology alone.
For over five generations, the Molyneux family has practised sustainable farming. Their methods protect the environment while ensuring high-quality produce, balancing contemporary practices with traditional wisdom. Year-round cropping supports local wildlife, and crop rotation with other farmers helps maintain soil health. MKC holds registrations with LEAF Marque and the Red Tractor, adhering to stringent environmental and quality standards. These certifications ensure the farm is managed responsibly across various criteria, including soil management, energy efficiency, and community engagement.
Chris Molyneux continues the family tradition of developing new plant strains through selective breeding. Over the years, the family has created a unique strain of curly kale with a sweet, mild flavour, available year-round, a first in the UK.
